Story-driven video games. Particularly the likes of Metal Gear Solid, Yakuza, God of War, Silent Hill. The original Metal Gear Solid for PS1 had a big impact on me as a young boy and is still incredibly important to me now. For me, video games can often do a much better job of immersing you in the world. Whether it be making you feel more of a connection to characters. Or forcing the playing to explore that dark corridor in a horror game they desperately don’t want to go down.
Different varieties of music. I’ve grown up around listening to music. And my dad definitely has an influence on what I listen to today. He would always be playing 60s and 60s influenced stuff around his house. Northern Soul stuff, The Jam, The Small Faces, plenty of great stuff. I even just love listening to soundtracks while I’m working or exercising to give me that motivation.
I more recently developed a love of animation. Particularly anime such as Fist Of The North Star, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Spirited Away, Akira, Dragon Ball series. I think I put it down to Dragon Ball Super. I used to love Dragon Ball Z when I was little but I thought I grew up and rather ignorantly looked at it as a kids show from then on. But then for some reason I decided to watch a few episodes of the new series and I found I really started to enjoy it and wanted to know more and more about different anime and how they are made and also looking up plenty of amateur animated videos on YouTube inspired me.
I’ve always loved films. For much the same reason I love Video games, anime etc. And I tend to like watching something with a good story. Watching a film usually sorts my head out if I’m not knowing what to do next or not feeling myself. I wouldn’t call myself a movie buff but I do enjoy a good film. A film I watch pretty much every year is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Its just a great family film and I love the locations its shot in. Also, I do like watching films with Clint Eastwood, Liam Neeson, Harrison Ford in for some reason.
